An Integrated Modeling Approach to Evaluate and Optimize Data Center Sustainability, Dependability and Cost

چکیده
Data centers have evolved dramatically in recent years, due to the advent of social networking services, e-commerce and cloud computing. The conflicting requirements are the high availability levels demanded against the low sustainability impact and cost values. The approaches that evaluate and optimize these requirements are essential to support designers of data center architectures. Our work aims to propose an integrated approach to estimate and optimize these issues with the support of the developed environment, Mercury. Mercury is a tool for dependability, performance and energy flow evaluation. The tool supports reliability block diagrams (RBD), stochastic Petri nets (SPNs), continuous-time Markov chains (CTMC) and energy flow (EFM) models. The EFM verifies the energy flow on data center architectures, taking into account the energy efficiency and power capacity that each device can provide (assuming power systems) or extract (considering cooling components). The EFM also estimates the sustainability impact and cost issues of data center architectures. Additionally, a methodology is also considered to support the modeling, evaluation and optimization processes. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the adopted methodology on data center power systems. Energies 2014, 7 239

A Power Load Distribution Algorithm to Optimize Data Center Electrical Flow
Energy consumption is a matter of common concern in the world today. Research demonstrates that as a consequence of the constantly evolving and expanding field of information technology, data centers are now major consumers of electrical energy. Such high electrical energy consumption emphasizes the issues of sustainability and cost. Against this background, the present paper proposes a power l...
متن کاملGenetic Algorithm-Based Optimization Approach for an Uncapacitated Single Allocation P-hub Center Problem with more realistic cost structure
A p-hub center network design problem is definition of some nodes as hubs and allocation of non-hub nodes to them wherein the maximum travel times between any pair of nodes is minimized. The distinctive feature of this study is proposing a new mathematical formulation for modeling costs in a p-hub center problem. Here, instead of considering costs as a linear function of distance, for the first...
متن کاملAn integrated Decision-Making Approach for Road Transport Evaluation in a Sustainable Supply Chain
One important step to achieve a sustainable transportation system is to control the impact and evaluate the effect of various influencing factors toward three dimensions of sustainability. Within this context, diverse analytical approaches have been developed to assess the sustainability level of various transportation systems, however, sustainability evaluation based on fuzzy multiple criteria...
متن کاملModeling and Analyzing Incremental Quantity Discounts in Transportation Costs for a Joint Economic Lot Sizing Problem
Joint economic lot sizing (JELS) addresses integrated inventory models in a supply chain. Most of the studies in this field either do not consider the role of the transportation cost in their analysis or consider transportation cost as a fixed part of the ordering costs. In this article, a model is developed to analyze an incremental quantity discount in transportation cost. Appropriate equatio...
متن کاملA Multi-objective Mathematical Model for Sustainable Supplier Selection and Order Lot-Sizing under Inflation
Recently, scholars and practitioners have shown an increased interest in the field of sustainable supplier selection and order lot-sizing. While several studies have recently carried out on this field, far too little attention has been given to formulating a multi-objective model for the integrated problem of multi-period multi-product order lot-sizing and sustainable supplier selection under i...
